5 Lies You Should STOP Telling Yourself Today

We’re just about a quarter of the way into 2019, and wow that was fast. Don’t you think? It was only three months ago that many of us were declaring 2019 a successful & mentally prosperous year. Good news is, it isn’t too late to make that your reality. Changing your circumstances dramatically, for the better, all starts in your mind. Some habits that are obvious, like the fact that every time you get a chance to nap you do and some habits that aren’t so obvious like negative self-talk. Let’s reveal and debunk some lies that you’ve been telling yourself that could be holding you back from turning your dream into a reality:

“I don’t have the skills to…”

Hello! That makes you the perfect person to start this passion project. The only elements needed to be successful are the willingness to learn, and dedication. Do you think Thomas Edison knew everything about lightbulbs before he started? Absolutely not! Acknowledging that you don’t know anything is fertile ground to nourish learning and knowledge. To sum it up, no one has started anything as an expert. Like no one…ever. Why would you be an exception? Jump in there and learn as you go!

“That’s sounds like a lot. It would never work for me.”

Yes, it would. You wouldn’t be here reading this article to give you that final push to begin if you didn’t think so. What separates you from the person who is doing it? The fact that they started. That’s it. You are capable because your passion, no matter how many times you push it off just doesn’t seem to leave the back of your mind. It’s your idea for a reason. If you don’t do it someone else will, but they won’t deliver it the way that you could.

“When I’m stable, I’ll start…”

Wrong answer, my friend! It is human nature to always want more, and your definition of stability will change year after year. What exactly does stability look like anyways? Having enough money that “if” you fail, you will survive until you find the next job? Putting our dreams on hold until you meet a deadline is unfortunately only pushing you further from the stability you are waiting to come. Stability lies within your passions and doing what makes you happy. No matter how that passion develops into something new, the feeling of stability will stay the same.

I don’t have the money to start … right now.”

Contrary to what many people say. It doesn’t always take money to make money. At least not right away. Could it require some money at some point? Of course it could! However, this is your passion project so it will be worth that much when the time comes. Telling yourself that you don’t have the resources or creativity is keeping you comfortable from trying something different, making sacrifices, having conversations that you’ve never had before and doing work that you’ve never done. As a popular quote says, “If you are only willing to do what’s easy, life will be hard. If you’re willing to do what’s hard, life will be easy.”

“I don’t have good ideas. Nothing is special about me.”

The biggest lie of them all. Can you believe just two years ago I thought this of myself too? It wasn’t until I started to dig deeper into my insecurities and change my self-image that my ideas began to flow in a way that I can no longer contain. We are born with the innate ability to dream. Tap into yourself and find out what’s been limiting your ability. Is it the fear that you may have to move back home and what others will think? Has someone you love constantly put you down? Unfortunately, these fears are real and sometimes out of our control. However, we can always choose to shed these fears and move on in a powerful and productive way.

Now let’s take a step back. Have you found yourself telling yourself these lies consciously or subconsciously by the way you live? I think we all have at one point, but as long as you have breath in your lungs you have the opportunity to choose something different. Give your inner dreamer a chance, and offer the world what only you can.

Until next time,
